A group of media professionals in Taipei attended a ＂Crisis Reporting＂ workshop aimed at preparing them for effective reporting during crises. The workshop focused on resilience, self-care, and comprehensive preparation.

A U.S. warship, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS John Finn, sailed south through the Taiwan Strait on January 24. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed that Taiwan’s military maintained control of the surrounding maritime and air domains during the passage. The U.S. Navy stated that the transit occurred outside the territorial seas of any coastal nations, highlighting the U.S.’s commitment to freedom of navigation. Taiwan’s MND issued a press release reconfirming the U.S. warship’s activity, emphasizing that the situation was normal.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has highlighted the increase in foreign media presence in the country due to its freedom in the media environment. Currently, there are 82 international media organizations and 174 journalists stationed in Taiwan. MOFA spokesman Jeff Liu emphasized that Taiwan’s open and free society, ranked sixth in internet freedom by Freedom House, is the main attraction for journalists. Taiwan’s freedom of the press, transparent flow of information, rule of law, respect for diverse opinions, and strategic location in the Indo-Pacific region contribute to its appeal as a hub for international media. MOFA is committed to assisting foreign media personnel with entry, residency, settling in, and work-related matters.

A civil alliance of local NGOs in Taiwan has launched a new moral code for reporting on Taiwanese elections. The code emphasizes fairness, accuracy, professional tones, respect for privacy, and media transparency. The initiative aims to enhance public trust in the media as elections approach. The alliance, consisting of Reporters Without Borders, Citizen Media Watch, and the Taiwan Media Watch Foundation, received widespread support from labor unions in the new media industry. The director of RSF Taipei Bureau highlighted the challenges faced by Taiwanese media, including political polarization and excessive commercialization. As the presidential campaigns intensify, more media organizations are expected to participate. The director of the Taiwan Media Watch Foundation emphasized the importance of press freedom in Taiwan’s democracy, warning of the negative impact manipulative activities could have on the democratic environment.

Independent presidential candidate Terry Gou and his running mate, Lai Pei-hsia, submitted a petition to the Taipei City Election Commission on November 1. Gou addressed a crowd outside the administrative center in the Xinyi district, emphasizing the significance of each signature on the petition and promising to press forward courageously in voicing the Taiwanese people’s pursuit of democracy and freedom. The number of signatures submitted was not disclosed at the time, but Gou’s campaign office stated that more details would be provided later.
